5 Must-Try Watersports in Costa Rica

  • August 2, 2021
  • Jules

Costa Rica is one of the most exciting countries in the world for many reasons – one of them being watersports. Water sports enthusiasts are spoiled for choice in this awesome country, with a range of exciting inland and coastal opportunities.

The natural beauty of the country, combined with perfect conditions for adventure, makes Costa Rica a destination like no other. So if you’re looking for the most epic holidays for watersports, then you’ve got to consider Costa Rica.

Check out these five different water sports that you can do here.

Fishing

No matter what time of year you visit Costa Rica, you will always be able to catch something. This country has a coastline full of fish. You could reel in tuna, sailfish, roosterfish, marlin, mahi-mahi, and more. Offshore fishing along the Pacific or Caribbean coastlines is best done on a half-day or full-day boat excursion. You could join one of the many guided fishing tours, or rent your own boat.

Costa Rica also offers amazing freshwater fishing opportunities. Lake Arenal, the biggest lake in the country, is full of fish. You can catch them from the shore of the lake, or on a boat. With various national parks both inland and along the coast, Costa Rica is the ideal destination for keen anglers.

Surfing

Costa Rica has over 300 beautiful sandy beaches and consistent swells throughout the year. The water is always warm, and the winds are steady, making this country a surfers paradise!

Most of the best surfing in Costa Rica is done along the Pacific coast, where famous spots like Witch’s Rock can be found. There are also some excellent waves along the southern Caribbean coast, with well-known destinations like Playa Cocles and Salsa Brava. Adventurous surfers can explore the many remote beaches and reserves in Costa Rica to find the kind of waves that they’ve always dreamed of.

The best time to surf in Costa Rica is between May and November during the wet season. If you want to experience the surfing holiday of your dreams, then pack your surfing equipment, and get to Costa Rica! You will certainly be rewarded.

Kayaking

Costa Rica has two magnificent coastlines, as well as over 20 rivers. Kayakers are faced with unlimited opportunities here.

Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore the stunning coastlines and national parks of Costa Rica. You could paddle along the Caribbean coast, visit small islands, explore rivers in the tropical rainforests, or adventure along the Pacific side of the country.

White water rafting

If you want to experience the thrill of rapids and fast-moving rivers, you couldn’t choose a better destination than Costa Rica. White water rafting can be done through the various gushing rivers in the tropical rainforests of the country.

There are many well-known rapids and rivers spread around the country. These vary in intensity and can be enjoyed by experienced white water rafters as well as total beginners. Some well-known rapids include the La Fortuna rapids, Rio Balsa, the Pena Blancas River, Rio Oro, and plenty more.

Snorkeling

Costa Rica is famous for its clear warm waters, tropical fish, and untouched nature. This makes it the perfect destination for snorkeling. Most snorkeling is done along the warm Caribbean coast, where there are various islands, isolated beaches, and national parks.

You could join a guided snorkeling tour, rent out gear while you’re there, or bring your own. Bringing your own snorkeling setup to Costa Rica, with things like fins, goggles, and even a setup area, is best. This allows you to explore some of the most remote beaches and unspoiled coastal destinations at your own pace.

Conclusion

Whatever kind of adventure you’re after, you’ll be able to find it in Costa Rica. This beautiful country offers everything any water sport enthusiasts would be after. From the warm and clear Caribbean to rainforest rivers and the Pacific coast, Costa Rica is a diverse and exciting country.

If you enjoy any of the watersports listed above, then Costa Rica will be a dream destination. The wide variety of activities available in this country also make it suitable for keen water sports adventurers of all skill and experience levels.
