Backpacking in Cambodia

Do not carry any low expectations from Cambodia, even though you have heard so much about it. When you arrive here, you are sure to get blown away by the warmth and hospitality of the people, as well as how beautiful the country is.  It is no wonder that Cambodia is fast becoming a popular travel destination, and those who have visited it once, have come back a dozen times. After all, it is loaded with a rich history and boasts of delicious food and a lively nightlife.

Book Malaysia Airlines flights to visit the land of Cambodia with beautifully preserved heritage temples and ancient palaces that are now listed among the UNESCO World heritage sites. The warmth and smile of Cambodian hospitality begin with the Malaysian airline, and this is why most people flying to Cambodia prefer to travel with the airline. Another popular airline that provides several connections to Cambodia is Singapore airline. An increasing number of passengers book Singapore airlines online to enjoy the very best of in-flight amenities and lower fares.

One of the significant reasons why Cambodia is perfect for backpackers is the lower costs of holidaying here. It is indeed a cheap country to visit, and one can enjoy the foodie and gastronomy scene, as well as the wonderful culture to the full and well within a budget.

Cheaper accommodation
You can easily find a dorm or hostel in Cambodia for around $4 per night. Depending on where you want to stay, the private rooms in guesthouses generally cost $5-10 per night, and many even include a free breakfast. Paying cheap doesn’t mean that you got to let go of the amenities like air-con, TV, and running hot water.

Low-cost food
Food is very cheap in Cambodia, and you can enjoy fresh and delicious food on the streets for just about $1-2 per meal. Even a nice western meal is a good restaurant that won’t cost you more than $5-15 per person.

Inexpensive transportation
The city transportation is cheap in the country, and no matter where you go, you can avail of a number of transportation options like Tuk-tuks, taxis, and buses. Tuk-tuks are popular, and one can easily negotiate a price for not more than $5. depending on the distance. You can rent a car with a driver for $15-20 for the day. And you can always take those buses to reach any corner of the country for less than $20.

Free and budgeted activities
Depending on the popularity of the activity, the prices can vary between $10-20. For example, the main attraction here is the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, and the cost of the entrance fee is around $40 USD per day.  Still, watching the sunrise over the Angkor Wat temples should be on your bucket list when on a Southeast Asia backpacking route. The small town of Kampot is another popular spot in Cambodia. Go kayaking on the river to explore the town and the region that is well known for pepper production.

There are some free things to do while in Cambodia, such as to see the monks in their Saffron robes in the morning at around 6 am when they go around collect morning alms and food. You can visit a local farmers’ market and look at the locally grown and organic produce of the country.  New customers can enjoy a free meditation session that lasts for an hour and give a rest to their mind and life in complete silence.

Typically, you can easily enjoy and explore Cambodia on about $25 per day as a backpacker, and these costs include your food, accommodation, and transportation costs.  Rest, the costs can add up based on what you plan to do and see and how many tours and excursions you want.
