Exploring a new vacation spot: top tips

  • March 22, 2018

Going on vacation to somewhere you’ve not been before is exciting, there’s a whole new place to discover, explore and enjoy. But, depending on how well traveled you are, it can be quite daunting too. What will it be like? Will it be safe? Will there be enough to see and do? These may just be some of the questions that might be going through your mind as you sit on the train or plane, but, don’t stress! You just need to do a bit of research and planning to get the most out of your getaway. Here are some top tips to get you thinking.

Think ahead

Making the most of a new vacation spot doesn’t just come when you arrive on location, you also need to do a bit of planning too. When you’re picking somewhere to go, you need to have a good look around and read guides to see what’s on offer. You’ll want to find out about the main sights and sounds, how to get around and, if you have a family, what kind of activities are on offer for them to enjoy.

Also, try and read some online reviews and blogs, as these are ideal for getting some top tips from those who’ve already been there. It can be invaluable for all sorts of aspects of your trip, from where to stay to where to go at night. Your family and friends may also have some recommendations, so ask for their opinions when you’re choosing a new vacation destination. If you don’t want to take a complete gamble, you could choose a spa resort location where you know exactly what you can expect. Have a look at luxury places such as French Lick Indiana, where you can enjoy rejuvenating spa treatments, world-class golf, horseback riding and more!

On arrival

When you get to your vacation spot, one of the first things you should be doing is heading for the tourist information center to pick up some maps and guides of the local area. This can help build on any research you’ve already done before leaving home. In particular, check out what events are planned during your stay – there could be a great musical festival or food fair on that you may not know about already.

You could also pick up some ideas for outdoor activities. Ask about walking and cycling routes and where you can hire a bike.

The tourist center may also be able to recommend some online apps for you to download. These are great to have on your smartphone, as sometimes they also feature GPS and can guide you step by step to the main attractions. Make sure you don’t miss out on the action and don’t get lost in the process!

Word of mouth

As well as all the regular attractions highlighted in the guides and apps, it’s sometimes worth asking the locals what they recommend. If you’re in a cafe, bar or restaurant, ask your server what they think’s worth checking out in town. They may well have some ideas that you’d never have found in any guidebook. If you want to get the most out of a new spot, word of mouth can be very useful. Be adventurous, but also be sensible. Don’t stray off into any unsafe areas and, if in doubt, ask for advice.
