7 Places in Melbourne You Must Visit

  • August 22, 2016

Melbourne, Australia is full of places worth visiting. There is no shortage of exciting activities and attractions to do and see. However, it can be difficult to narrow your choices down to a few, as Melbourne is the second largest of all Australia’s cities. Here are seven places in Melbourne you must visit:

1. The Royal Botanic Gardens, located south of the Yarra River is among Melbourne’s most popular attractions for a reason. It is considered one of the world’s finest public gardens and was established in 1846. There are over 50,000 plants at the Gardens and many of them are rare plant species. On a yearly basis, 1.5 million people visit this attraction. During the summer months, live theater performances are often held at the Gardens. Other noteworthy activities that take place there include the Aboriginal Heritage Walk. This is a tour you can take in which you will learn about Australians and their heritage.

2. Walking along the banks of the Yarra River will lead you to the Southbank and Arts Center Melbourne. Within the center, there are many cafes, both inside and outside, as well as full service restaurants. This is a place where you can enjoy live entertainment as well. If you visit on a Sunday, you will get to experience the weekly arts and craft market. The center also contains the Fairfax, State and Playhouse Theaters as well as Hamer Hall. It is recommended that you visit Hamer Hall to take in a performance by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

3. Federation Square is another place that you should visit in Melbourne. In 2002, Federation Square opened to mark the 100th year of the federation of Melbourne, and it is now considered an important place. The buildings located in the Square are a great place to view Victorian architecture. Over 2,000 events are held here every year. Some of the attractions at the Square all year long include the Australian Center for the Moving Image and the Ian Potter Gallery, which is full of Australian artwork.

4. The Melbourne Cricket Ground is a stadium that seats 100,000. The stadium has been the site of sports games since 1853 and is among the greatest stadiums in the world. In 1956 the Melbourne Cricket Ground was the main stadium used in that year’s Olympic Games as well as the Commonwealth games in 2006. Every day, tourists can take a 75-minute tour of the stadium which includes a stop at the Australian Gallery of Sport and the Olympic Museum as well as memories of many of sports history’s greatest moments. While cricket is played at this stadium during the summer months, football is played there during the winter months.

5. The Queen Victoria Market is not only an icon but it has been the place where tourists and locals get fresh produce, dating as far back as 1878. Its large food hall is a site to see and its market stalls sell more than just fresh foods. There are also many stalls where you can purchase toys, clothing and even rare pieces of artwork. During the summer months, it is not unusual for the Market to offer nighttime markets, open later than usual business hours. It is even possible to visit and take a tour of the Market.

Getting to these five places can be easy to do. Two of your reliable transportation options are a bus charter in Melbourne and Melbourne chauffeur cars. You may choose either of them for a comfortable, relaxed travelling experience.
