Visiting Bath – the best indie shops

  • October 16, 2013
  • Jules

Bath is one of the most historic and architecturally beautiful cities to visit in the UK. But the city also has some really nice independent shopping gems that you’ve got to check out while you’re there. Below we’ve highlighted a few of the must see places to visit while you’re in town. Whether you’re into books and comics, music, stuff for kids or just chilling out with a perfect coffee, Bath has a lot to offer.

Topping and Company Booksellers

Topping and Company have bookshops in Bath and Ely, and the beautiful Bath branch is a must see for anyone who is passionate about books. It plays an active role in the literary community of Somerset and according to their website it was even described as “One of the finest bookshops in the world” by author Alexander McCall Smith.

There are regular events in the shop, including book groups, guest speakers and coffee and cake evenings with visiting writers. Located on The Paragon near Broad Street, Topping and Company Booksellers is a great place to spend some time browsing.

Vintage to Vogue

Vintage to Vogue is an excellent vintage clothing shop which specialises in providing a range of quality men’s and women’s clothes from vintage items to contemporary designer wear. All the clothes are carefully selected to make sure you always find the best vintage gems and unique finds when you pay a visit.

The shop is located on Milsom Street in central Bath, and it’s the perfect place to find something special for any occasion including formal wear, coats, casual wear and accessories such as jewellery and ties. The owners are also involved in the wider vintage scene in Bath so if you’re looking for more advice on shopping in the city you’d do well to pop in and have a chat to the staff.

My Small World

My Small World is a unique toy shop which stocks traditional wooden toys and the best, coolest modern toys from designers all around Europe. It’s a true treasure trove where your kids can get stuck in playing with the toys and you can find great gifts and reconnect with happy childhood memories.

The shop caters for children under six but it’s a joy for adults and children alike, so well worth popping in if you find yourself in the new shopping district of Southgate near the train station.

American Dream Comics

American Dream Comics is the place to go for comics and graphic novel aficionados in Bath; or indeed anyone with a sweet tooth. The shop stocks American candy as well as the best comics, games, t shirts and retro toys. It’s a something of a hidden gem on Walcot Street but for those in the know it is a well-loved and important place in the city.

American Dream Comics take part on the annual Free Comic Book Day celebrations, so the first Saturday in May is always a good day to swing by and pick up some free comics to add to your collection or get it started.

Jacob’s Coffee House

When you’re starting to flag after a great day of shopping in Bath, Jacob’s Coffee House is there to pick you up and reenergise you ready for more. The coffee house is situated in an amazing location right by Bath Abbey and the Royal Baths on Abbey Churchyard. Noted for expertly selected blends that keep local coffee nuts satisfied, delicious cakes and pastries, and a relaxing and friendly atmosphere, Jacob’s is the king of Bath coffee shops.

Bath Compact Discs and Broad Street Jazz

In 2012 the legendary Broad Street Jazz moved in with neighbours and long-time friends Bath Compact Discs, allowing the two shops to weather tough economic times to keep serving their loyal customers a choice selection of the best jazz and classical music available in Bath.

Both shops have an extensive range in store and offer more titles for order through their websites. The friendly staff are always keen to speak to people about the music they are passionate about, so if you are a jazz or classical fan you can’t visit Bath without stopping by the shop on Broad Street.

All these great shops and many more are centrally located and easy to reach as part of a trip round the classic sights of Bath. Stay in a central hotel such as the Francis Hotel – Mgallery Collection on Queen Square and you’ll have the best of Bath just minutes away for your entire stay.
