Comprehensive travel insurance; what to look out for

  • May 10, 2011

Travel insurance is very important, whether you’re going abroad for a relaxing couple of weeks by the sea or an adrenaline-filled adventure half-way around the world. Whatever your reason for travelling, you need to make sure you find a policy that gives you an adequate level of cover.

Here are some of the main things to look out for:

•    Overseas medical cover – This is particularly important as hospital bills can be extremely expensive abroad, especially if you need to be flown home. Look for a policy that gives you a minimum of $1 million cover.

•    Holiday cancellation – If you have to cancel your holiday, you can risk losing all the money you paid for flights and accommodation. However, with cancellation cover, most or all of these costs are covered. Don’t forget to check that the policy you choose covers the total cost you paid for your holiday.

•    Baggage cover – When you go abroad, your baggage and personal possessions are at risk of getting stolen, lost or damaged. A good policy will provide cover if something should happen to your personal items while you’re abroad. Make sure you check the individual item limit on your policy, especially if you’re taking away something expensive like a camera.

•    Cover for sports and activities – if you’re going scuba diving or bungee jumping, don’t forget to make sure your policy will cover you. Most policies exclude cover for sports and activities but usually allow you to purchase additional cover at a small price.
