Focus On Cambodia; Festivals and Highlights

  • March 4, 2009

Cambodia is famed for Angkor Wat which is just the center of what is actually some 40 temples and palace ruins. These are spread out over 200km and are simply known as Angkor. Set within the jungle the amazing architecture tells the history and culture of the Khmer people through the sculptures. Angkor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and conservation work continues to ensure this man-made treasure is preserved.

Angkor Wat itself has been compared to the Egyptian pyramids and was built as a Hindu temple or tomb. The Kingdom of Angkor was founded in the ninth century but only recently has work started in earnest to clear the jungle back and expose wonders such as the sites of Baphuon Ta Prohm, Phnom Bakheng and Bayon.

A one-day visit will not do Angkor justice so if you can allow several days you will be well rewarded.

Whilst in Cambodia, why not coincide your trip with one of the annual festivals and events:

April –   Bonn Chaul Chhnam Khmer – Cambodia
May – Bonn Chroat Preah Nongkoal – The Royal Palace, Phnom Penh
September-October –  Bonn Phchum Ben – The Silver Pagoda, Phnom Penh
October – The King’s Birthday – The Royal Palace, Phnom Penh
October – Bonn Kathen – Cambodia
November – Water Festival on the Banks of the Mekong – Banks of the Mekong River, Phnom Penh
November – Festival of the Reversing Current (Bon Om Tuk) – Phnom Penh

Whilst exploring Cambodia, make time to see further highlights including:

  • Koh Kong Conservation Area
