Right now I couldn’t think of anywhere better to be than on a sandy beach on a tropical island – complete with a good book in one hand, an ominously-named cocktail in the other hand and that bright yellow thing in the sky smiling down… bliss.
Whether your ideal island getaway features high-octane adventures and activities, lazing around on powder white sands with crystal clear seas lapping at your toes or traipsing around cultural or historical sites, this list has something for everybody!
TripAdvisor has just revealed its ‘Travelers’ Choice Islands Awards’ which has ranked the Top 10 Beaches in the USA, Africa, Asia, Europe, Americas and the World. In all 100 islands have made their way onto the various Top 10 lists.
Coming in at number one is Ambergris Caye on Belize’s Caribbean coast, which offers scuba diving in a real tropical paradise. Travellers are drawn to the stunning coral reefs and opportunities for superb fishing, sailing, snorkelling and birdwatching. And inland on the largest island in Belize is tropical savannahs, peaceful lagoons and of course, stunning white beaches.
In second place is St John Island in the US Virgin Islands, again in the Caribbean Sea. St John is extremely laidback and peaceful and is the smallest of the three main US Virgin islands (the other two are Saint Croix and Saint Thomas). And in third place is the volcanic Bora Bora Island in French Polynesia in Oceania. Considered the epitomy of luxury, a Bora Bora getaway isn’t cheap but so worth it.
