Walking the Camino Your Way: The Benefits of a Self-Guided Journey

  • August 20, 2026
  • Jules

If you are into hiking, then you may have come across the Camino de Santiago before. Over the years, it’s become very popular, with more and more people booking a self-guided trip to experience a journey like no other. For centuries, pilgrims have followed its historic routes across Spain and beyond, drawn by the landscapes, villages, culture and sense of achievement that comes with reaching Santiago de Compostela.

Today, you don’t necessarily have to join an organised group or follow a strict schedule to experience it. Self-guided Camino tours are becoming an increasingly popular way to complete the journey, offering travellers the freedom to walk at their own pace while still having the practical details taken care of. Plus, you don’t have to walk the full route; you can do segments of it, such as the Camino de Santiago organized from Sarria or the Camino Portugués from Tui, amongst other options.

What Is a Self-Guided Camino?

A self-guided Camino journey gives you the freedom of walking independently, without being tied to a group or accompanied by a tour leader.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to organise everything yourself. Before setting off, the essential elements of the trip are arranged for you. This typically includes pre-booked accommodation along the route, luggage transfers between stages, route information and documentation, and support should you need assistance during your journey.

Your days are then yours to enjoy. You can walk with a partner, friends, family or even independently, stopping when you want to take photographs, explore a village, enjoy a long lunch or simply appreciate the scenery.

Freedom Without the Planning Hassle

One of the biggest attractions of a self-guided Camino is the balance between independence and convenience.

Planning a long-distance walking holiday can involve a considerable amount of research. You need to decide which route to take, work out how far to walk each day, find suitable accommodation and consider what to do with your luggage. You also need reliable route information and a plan for what happens if something doesn’t go according to schedule. A self-guided trip takes much of this work away. This can make the experience considerably more comfortable, particularly for international travellers who may be unfamiliar with the Camino and the regions they are travelling through.

Walk at Your Own Pace

A guided group can be a great way to experience the Camino, but it also means adapting to someone else’s itinerary. A self-guided journey removes that restriction. You decide when to start your day, how long you want to spend walking, and where you want to take a break. If a particular stretch of the route catches your attention, you can take your time. If you reach your destination early, you can spend the afternoon exploring rather than waiting for the rest of a group. This flexibility can also make the Camino easier to fit around your own travel preferences.

Have you done a Camino de Santiago before? What are the reasons you want to go on one? Is there anything you would like us to add to our guide? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
