The UK has just announced ambitious plans to build the world’s largest offshore wind farm. The go ahead has been given to the €2.2bn project called the London Array.
The world’s first oneGW offshore wind farm will be built 12 miles off the coast of Essex and Kent in England, in the outer estuary area of the Thames River, on a ninety square mile site.
London Array will eventually supply enough power for about 750,000 homes, which is a quarter of the property in Greater London properties. 1.9m tonnes of CO2 emissions will also be displaced each year.
It is hoped that the project will begin producing renewable power as soon as 2012 and is hailed as a flagship project for the UK government who aims to cut emissions by 80% by 2050.
