How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Bonaire

  • September 9, 2024
  • Robert

Bonaire, part of the Leeward Antilles, is essential for any water sports enthusiast. This tiny tropical island paradise sits just off the coast of Venezuela and despite its small size, there’s a lot to see. With more than 85 dive sites, two national parks, and fun land-based activities like golf, the key to having a good time is good planning.

Being organized will ensure you get to see all this beautiful island has to offer. In this article, we’ll go over how to plan the perfect trip, from booking accommodation to finding a diver-friendly vehicle.

Choose the Right Time to Visit

While the weather is warm and tropical year-round, Bonaire still has a distinct high and low season. The peak season runs from December to April. While the weather is best during this time, the island is busier and prices are higher. If you prefer a quieter trip with more wallet-friendly options, consider visiting in the off-season which runs from May to November.

Where to Stay in Bonaire

There’s something for every taste and budget when it comes to accommodation. If you want to be close to restaurants, shops, and the bustling waterfront, staying in Kralendijk (the island’s capital) is ideal.

On the other hand, Lac Bay is a great choice if you want to connect with nature. It’s a hotspot for windsurfers and home to several eco-friendly resorts and beachside cabins. From luxury resorts to charming guesthouses and basic hostels, make sure to book ahead to secure your perfect stay.

Essential Activities

Bonaire is renowned for its magical underwater world, a maze of vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful fish, turtles, rays, and (on the east coast) even sharks. There are multiple SCUBA dive centers, but if you’re not a certified diver, don’t worry. The local snorkeling is just as rewarding, with many spots accessible right from the shore.

Getting Around the Island

The best way to explore Bonaire is by car. At its widest point, it’s around seven miles (12 kilometers) across, and from top to bottom it’s around 24 miles (or 40 kilometers). This means you can do the whole coastline in a day if you want to by renting a vehicle from 123 car rental Bonaire.

Renting a car means you can discover the island at your own pace, with the freedom to go wherever and whenever you please. If you’re planning on doing a lot of diving, some companies even offer packages that give you free, unlimited dive tanks.

Dining and Nightlife

Trying the local cuisine is a necessity, with dishes like goat stew and fresh seafood on the menu. You can find anything from burgers to Indian food here, often with a delicious Caribbean twist.

There are a couple of casinos on Bonaire, as well as plenty of clubs, beach bars, and resorts. A great way to spend the afternoon is at one of the island’s many happy hours, sipping a cold beer and listening to live music courtesy of a local band.

Endnote

Before you arrive in Bonaire, plan the timing of your visit, where you’ll stay, your activity itinerary, and transport. Whether you’re diving into the crystal-clear waters or soaking up the sun on a secluded beach, Bonaire is sure to be a trip you’ll remember for a lifetime.
