Why You Should Add Madeira to Your Holiday Bucket List

  • November 9, 2023

Everyone has a bucket list when it comes to dream holiday destinations. Whether it’s the magic of Disney World or the perfect beaches of the Maldives, there’s something undeniably soothing about daydreaming you’re on the holiday of a lifetime, spending your lunch hour looking at flights and thinking about what you’re going to do when you land.

But what if we told you a dream destination was closer than you thought? Madeira is a truly breathtaking Portuguese territory located in the Atlantic Ocean that has been heralded as a true hidden gem by all who have experienced its unique exoticism. From its rich history and remarkable landscapes to unique experiences, Madeira offers something for everyone.

Visiting Madeira

Often referred to as the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” Maderia is an island paradise easily (and affordably) accessible via regular flights from most major European cities thanks to its own airport, named after famous Madeiran footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. The official language spoken is Portuguese, but English is widely understood as there are thousands of expats on the island, making it a very welcoming destination for Brits.

Once you arrive, you’ll be taken by the island’s lush greenery, dramatic cliffs, and a warm, mild climate that sticks around all year. This means it’s an ideal destination for a little winter sun but it’s during the summer months that it really reveals its charms.

The History of Madeira

Madeira’s history is as fascinating as its natural beauty. The archipelago was first discovered by Portuguese explorers in the early 15th century, and it played a vital role in the Age of Discovery, serving as a crucial stopover for ships travelling to and from Africa, the Americas, and Asia.

Over the centuries, Madeira’s culture has been shaped by a mix of Portuguese, African, and Moorish influences, creating a unique blend of traditions, cuisine, and architecture. The island’s capital, Funchal, meanwhile, has blossomed into a vibrant city where history and modernity coexist, and you’ll find a unique blend of old-world charm and modern convenience.

It’s also become one of the most desirable cruise ports in the Mediterranean so if you’re not 100% sure you want to dedicate a whole holiday to the Madeira, you can always take a cruise and spend a day capturing the flavour of the place.

Madeira’s Top 3 Experiences

While you could comfortably spend a week (or more) simply relaxing in a Portuguese villa overlooking the sea, Maderia is full of incredible experiences you truly don’t want to miss.

Ride a Monte Sledge – The archetypal Madeiran activity. Experience an exhilarating ride on a traditional wicker toboggan, known as a Monte sledge, down the steep streets of Funchal. It’s a thrilling and iconic Madeiran experience that’s as thrilling as it is bizarre.

Visit the Botanical Gardens – Take a scenic cable car ride to reach these incredible gardens and witness a diverse collection of plants from around the world that rivals some of the most exotic gardens on earth.

Forte Sao Jose – Initially built for the purpose of defending the maritime entrance to Funchal. Today, the fort, which is located right where the cruise ships come in, is owned by an incredibly quirky individual who declares it “the smallest country in the world.” We’ll say no more.
