3 Tips for College Students Traveling on a Budget

  • March 20, 2023

If you’re a broke college student, traveling the world might not seem possible. The truth is that traveling can be as expensive as a cross-country move without the help of Black Tie Moving, but it can also be done on a tight budget. Whether you’re looking to plan a fun trip across the country for spring break or wondering how to travel overseas during summer vacation, here are a few helpful tips.

Save Constantly

One of the biggest mistakes that many people make when planning to save for a trip is failing to save money before the last minute. While saving money for a trip before the trip is even planned can be difficult to justify, the truth is that doing so is the best way to ensure you save enough money to travel the way you want without causing yourself any last-minute stress. If you can, try putting a little bit of money aside from each paycheck you receive with the intent to spend it on a trip in the future. This will make saving up in small increments easier, and your future self will thank you!

Visit Cities Where You Have Friends

One of the most expensive parts of traveling for people of all ages is lodging. Hotels, Airbnb, and other lodging options can cost hundreds of dollars per night, making any trip extremely expensive and causing a great deal of financial stress no matter how much money you have saved up. One way to solve this problem while ensuring that you have a fun and meaningful trip is traveling to cities where your friends, family, or other loved ones live. Not only will this give you the opportunity to catch up with people you care about, but it will likely result in you having a place to stay for free, resulting in major savings on the cost of your trip overall.

Be Flexible With Dates

Being flexible with travel dates can be difficult when you are a college student with limited time off to travel, but doing so is one of the best ways to save up money if you are able. Be sure to choose the flexible dates option with any airline or hotel, and you are sure to be surprised by the amount of money you are able to save just by traveling on certain dates as opposed to others.
