How to Create Your Own Self-Guided Walking Tours of Niagara Falls

The popularity of walking tours has been on the rise in recent years.

The trend that became noticeable in 2016 has only accelerated thanks to more people looking for ways to spend their time outdoors in a post pandemic world.

Niagara Falls walking tours are no exception. In fact there is a Niagara Falls tour company that is dedicated to serving the growing demand; Walk Niagara Tours.

For those looking to try out their own personal walking tour of Niagara Falls, here is some information that we hope will help you do just that.

The first question you’ll want to ask yourself is…

WHAT TYPE OF TOUR ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?

With so many different types of attractions to experience in Niagara Falls it’s pretty much impossible to include it all so you can choose to customize your tour experience by making one that is:

  1. Historic tour (e.g. Niagara’s Fury, Nikola Tesla Statue, Power Station etc.,)
  2. Thrill seekers tour (e.g. Ziplining, White Water Walk, Journey Behind The Falls etc.,)
  3. Sightseeing tour (e.g. Niagara Falls tunnel experience, boat tour etc.,)

Or any other niche theme you can think of (food, celebrity, active etc,)

Once you know what type of walking your you’re looking for, now it’s time to get here.

HOW TO GET TO NIAGARA FALLS

From Toronto you’ll take the QEW all the way down to exit ON-420 which gets you into the downtown core.

From Buffalo you’ll take the I-190 north towards the Peace Bridge, cross the border than follow the QEW to the same ON-420 exit.

Pretty easy!

There are many parking options available throughout Niagara Falls but the two largest paid lots would be:

  1. Falls Parking Lot A at 6635 Niagara Parkway
  2. Clifton Hill Parking at 4960 Clifton Hill

Once you’re settled in, it’s time to start enjoying the sights and sounds by beginning your self-guided walking tour.

EXAMPLE OF A NIAGARA FALLS WALKING TOUR

As outlined above you can customize Niagara Falls walking tours to fit your goals, but here’s a template you could start with if you’re looking for a leg up.

  1. Park at the base of the Skylon Tower (5200 Robinson St) and take the exterior elevator ride up to enjoy an aerial view of Niagara Falls.
  2. Walk to the Table Rock House and check out the sights along the way (walk through Queen Victoria Park and past the Nikola Tesla Statue, upper Niagara rapids and the international control dam).
  3. Take the Journey Behind Niagara Falls.
  4. Walk over to the Niagara Falls boat tour and check out more sights on the way (Horseshoe Falls, Goat Island across the river, Niagara Falls observation tower etc.).

All in all, depending on how long you stay at each attraction you’re looking at around a 3 – 4 hour tour duration.

With so much to see and do in Niagara Falls you can almost never go wrong!

Especially if you’re experiencing it on foot.

WHY ARE WALKING TOURS BECOMING SO POPULAR?

Since more people are seeking out activities that are healthier for both themselves and the planet, walking tours are very much on trend.

Going at a slower pace by walking not only leaves a smaller carbon foot print, it also allows you to see and experience more than you would by whizzing by in a van or tour bus.

Bottom line is there’s really no better way to get an intimate experience of an area than walking through it.

Looking for a cherry on top? Walking tours are often the cheaper tour option as well!
