15 Things You Should Know About the Galapagos Islands

  • February 7, 2022
  • Jules

Galapagos Islands are a wonderful destination with various marine reserves and large biodiversity. Here are 15 interesting facts about the islands.

If you plan to visit the Galapagos Islands, you have made the right choice! Galapagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean, around 650 miles west of Ecuador. So, you can imagine the blue sea surrounding the beautiful islands.

1. World Heritage Site

With rich biodiversity on land and water, Galapagos Island was the first destination considered by UNESCO to be included in the list of World Heritage Sites. Many people worldwide gather here to see the abundant wildlife residing in the islands.

2. Accidentally Discovered

If the islands weren’t accidentally discovered, no one would have known about the majestic islands and the inhabitants! It was first discovered in 1535 by Tomás de Berlanga when a strong wind blew his ship off course while going to Peru.

3. The Formation Of The Islands

It is speculated that the Galapagos Islands were created around 4 to 5 million years ago through volcanic eruptions. The continuous active volcanic activities and rainfall testify to the fact that the islands were a result of multiple volcanic eruptions.

Even today, the most active volcano, famously known as Fernandina, can be seen in the western part of the islands. People visit and walk on the lava fields that have cooled down since the eruption.

4. Three Types of Booby Birds

The term “booby” came from the clumsiness that can be seen in the way these intriguing birds walk. Three types of birds can easily be distinguished with their distinct colors: Red-footed boobies, blue-footed boodies, and Nazca boobies.

5. Charles Darwin Found His Inspiration Here

Galapagos Islands were formed separately from the mainlands, away from humans, growing rich in their flora and fauna. During his visit in 1835, 300 years after the islands were first discovered, Charles Darwin’s findings proved his theory that evolution took place through natural selection.

In his essay, “Origin of Species,” he stated that species of animals could be differentiated through patterns and traits on their body. For instance, birds can be distinguished from the size and shape of their beak that evolved by the type of food they consumed.

6. National Park

The land in the islands is so vast and full of greenery that 97 percent of it has been recognized as the National Park. It offers educational services to the locals and visitors about nature and biodiversity conservation.

Not only that, since there are strict rules all over the park, crime rates are extremely low here.

7. Diverse Marine Life

The islands’ location is at the convergence of three ocean currents, making it one of the world’s most diverse marine habitats. Nowhere can you experience anything like the diverse range of marine life underwater in the world.

Some marine organisms are specific to the islands only. Visitors from all around the world come here to see these exotic creatures with their own eyes.

8. Marine Iguana – Underwater Lizard

The only known iguana species to dive underwater are found in Galapagos Islands only! They are agile swimmers and are a sight you cannot miss.

9. Giant Tortoises

Giant Tortoises, present in the Galapagos Islands only, are extraordinary animals that can live up to 150 years! Fortunately for the people who want to see them, they are available all year round.

10. Penguins Of Galapagos Islands

These are the smallest species of their kind and are the only penguins found in the Northern Hemisphere. They can be observed waddling the lava fields of the Ferdinand volcano. They’re not easily found on land tours, so it’s helpful to take one of the best Galapagos cruises.

11. Perfect Weather All Year Round

There are only two main and distinct seasons that can be experienced here:

i) Hot weather – a generally warm and humid season that begins from mid-November till May with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 27°C. Rainfall occurs mainly during the warm season. It is the perfect time for people who love water activities, like swimming and snorkeling.

ii) Cold/dry weather- this season lasts from June through November with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 23°C. This is the best time for sightseeing as different species, such as giant tortoises, sea lions, penguins, surface during this time of the year.

12. Hot Or Cold, Daytime Remains The Same

You probably know about this island that the length of daytime remains the same regardless of the season. The islands are located near the equator, which means they have balanced temperatures throughout the year.

13. Secret Hideout For The Pirates

Due to the islands’ isolated location, it was the perfect refuge for the 16th-century pirates. The islands had a rich food source and consisted of remote spots, perfect for the pirates to hide their loots.

14. Animals Are Not Afraid Of Humans

Surprisingly, the endemic animals are not afraid of humans. This might be because they lived here for hundreds of years before any man showed up. Another reason is that there are few to no natural predators, so the animals didn’t develop the instinct of fear. This gives the visitors an unforgettable experience.

15. Basic Packing Items To Carry

When you plan a trip, it is absolutely necessary that you carry the essentials and not pack too much for achieving the best experience. Here is a Galapagos packing list you can carry with you when you shop for the trip:
