How To Celebrate Earth Day

  • April 21, 2009
  • admin

The world is gearing up to celebrate Earth Day, which aims to raise awareness and inspire appreciation for our planet and environment. Earth day has been held annually since 1970 when the event was created by US Senator Gaylord Nelson, in his words, to “put the environment into the political ‘limelight’ once and for all”.

Whether you are celebrating Earth Day at school, at work or individually, here are some of our tips and ideas on how you can mark the day:

1. Plant Trees – help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by planting trees, either in your own garden or as part of a community project.

2. Learn – make it your mission to learn more about our environment and the animals and plants in it. Why not broaden your knowledge and learn about other countries and cultures.

3. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – think about what you buy and how you buy it and try cut down on packaging and try to eliminate plastic bags. Repair household items and clothes and recycle your waste food, paper, glass etc. have a clear out and send clothing and bric-a-brac to charity shops.

4. Eat and Drink Locally – think about where your next meal has come from and try to source food and drink locally from farmers markets and local shops. Try to buy food that is in season and you will be rewarded with great taste and freshness.

5. Leave the Car at Home – Gasp! Yes get out and about and get fit and healthy at the same time! Leave the car at home and try to walk and bike to work, school and the shops.

Enjoy your activities, have a great Earth Day and remember to use these tips every day.
