Planning your next holiday for this year, and want to go away on an exciting city break? To help get you inspired on where you want to head to next, here are three of the top city breaks in Europe. While two cities in the UK and one in France might not be an extensive list, it might help you to get the ball rolling on your next holiday destination.
Liverpool
Something a little bit different from the typical UK tourist visit to London – a city that attracts half of all visits to the country – The northern city of Liverpool is an area bursting with rich culture, music, history, and an exciting nightlife scene for those wanting to go out of an evening. Whether it’s visiting the locations once played by local legends the Beatles, or visiting the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings at the royal albert dock, there’s plenty to do.
Many of the top European cities feature world-class football clubs and teams, and Liverpool is no different. Not only does the city hold host to Premier League side Everton, who are set to move into a new stadium fairly soon, but it is also the home to current European and world champions Liverpool F.C. Both clubs have stadium tours that are worth doing if you’re into that sort of thing. Football stadiums aren’t the only sites set to see regeneration in the coming years, though. Local investment company RWinvest stated that the city is set to flourish and increase in popularity throughout 2020 and beyond, which will only make it an even better place to visit as a tourist.
Paris
Known as the city of love and romance, Paris, the central French capital, is a great place to get away with a loved one to spend some time together. From the Louvre to the famous Eiffel Tower, there are plenty of famous landmarks to explore and marvel at – or alternatively, you can simply saunter along the streets and bask in your surroundings.
Want to take in the sights and sounds of the French city while you do a bit of shopping on the side? A long stroll down the Champs-Elysees will give you the best of both worlds, with bars, restaurants, café’s and luxury shops lining the streets along the way, and ending with the perfect photo opportunity by the Arc de Triomphe. If you go into the site at night and climb to the top, you can even get an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding city – an alternative for those that haven’t booked the Eiffel tower in advance!
London
While cities such as Liverpool in the UK offer something a little bit different from the traditional visit to the country’s capital city to visit well-known monuments such as the London Eye or houses of parliament, there’s no denying that if you’ve never been there before, London is a brilliant place to visit. The power and influence it has over culture in other cities, not just in the UK but in Europe and the wider world, is huge, and pretty much anything you can think of you can do while there.
Tip – If only visiting London for a short stay, try to be as efficient as you possibly can when travelling around, and maybe even try to plan out your days based on where things are in the city, rather than doing one activity in one place, only then to have to travel all the way back for something else. The London underground is one of the best ways of getting around here, so use that if you can get your head around it!
