Ionian yacht charter: An insider’s guide to the best islands to discover

  • November 27, 2019
  • admin

Off the western coast of mainland Greece lie the Ionian Islands, a stunning chain of seven island gems rich in history and charm, and a popular destination with yacht enthusiasts. Boasting stunning flora and fauna, pristine beaches lapped by emerald waters, quaint villages, and striking coastlines, an Ionian yacht charter is a travel experience must.

If you’re looking for the perfect destination to visit on a yacht charter in Greece, then charter a path to the Ionian Islands.

Here’s the best islands to discover during an Ionian yacht charter

Discover Corfu

The second largest of the Ionian islands, no Ionian yacht charter is complete without a visit here. Corfu offers a rich culture and heritage with evidence throughout the island of its years spent under Venetian, French, and British rule. Head to Corfu City and its atmospheric Old Town, a pedestrian-only UNESCO world-heritage site. Worth exploring is the 14th century Old Fortress, which offers fantastic views of the city and the Ionian Sea stretching out into the Mediterranean.

Be sure to visit Cape Drastis during your Ionian yacht charter, the most northerly part of Corfu. Boasting stunning sheer cliffs and white sandy coves, this is a stunning spot to anchor and soak up the Mediterranean sun.

Make sure you leave time to feast on some of Corfu’s legendary cuisine. Each of the Ionian Islands has its own unique mouthwatering dishes. On Corfu lamb is the meat of choice, along with fresh seafood caught by local fishermen. Cap your meal off with Sykomaïtha, a delicious fig-based cake.

Fall in love with Paxos and Antipaxos

Laid-back Paxos is ideal for those who crave a more low-key experience, away from the madding crowds. Just seven miles long and three miles wide, Paxos is dotted with quaint villages, with some 2,500 residents living across the homesteads of Gaios, Logos, and Lakka, each well worth visiting.

Paxos features a vast number of olive groves and its olive growing tradition is celebrated at the Olive Museum, an 18th century stone mill and once a traditional olive press.

For hiking enthusiasts hit the old trails, which afford wonderful views. Just off the island’s dramatic coastline, dive enthusiasts will find a host of underwater caves and shipwrecks just waiting to be explored.

While in Paxos be sure to head to Antipaxos, just two kilometers away. This tiny island is just some 4kms-square and has a population of less than 100, making it a truly off-the-beaten-track destination to visit during an Ionian yacht charter.

Explore Kythira

Gorges, waterfalls, pristine beaches, and pretty white-washed villages make up this Ionian island idyll.

Head to the island’s capital Hora, set on a hill above the port of Kapsali, and explore the Venetian castle offering spectacular views of Hora and the Ionian Sea, or check out the abandoned town of Paleochora, the medieval ancient capital of Kythira, which is dotted with ancient Byzantine churches and chapels.

Head to Kefalonia

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands, yet still features ample island charm that seduces visitors back time-and-time again. Discover a wealth of things to see and do.

Hikers should head up the Black Mountain, the highest mountain in the Ionian Islands and a national park known for its stunning range of wildflowers. Alternatively, explore the picturesque port of Fiskardo, peppered with charming 18th-century buildings. Enjoy a delicious traditional meal at one of the many eateries or explore the village’s wonderful array of local boutiques and shops.

Kefaliano is also the ideal island to explore by boat during an Ionian yacht charter due to its abundance of beaches and bays accessible only via the sea.

So, whatever experience you seek, an Ionian yacht charter is a holiday must.
