Zimbabwe is an example of a country of startling contrasts. It is a landlocked country rich in natural resources such as asbestos, chromium, coal, copper, gold, iron ore, lithium (for batteries), nickel, platinum, tin, and vanadium. It is also a source of tobacco and precious gemstones. The land is lush and well suited for growing crops. It was once a land filled with opportunities for travel and holiday fun.
But due to political mismanagement and economic chaos, the country is torn by strife and poverty. The people desperately need help to rebuild their shattered homeland. Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world is in Zimbabwe. It is the most photographed waterfall on earth but without volunteers to help rebuild the country, it will be hard for Zimbabwe to gain the benefit of this tourist destination and the others on offer in this beautiful and fascinating country.
The Lost Decades
Under the authoritarian rule of Robert Mugabe, from 1980 to November 2017, Zimbabwe experienced a steady descent into economic decline. Mugabe’s land-use policies decimated the once-thriving farming industry and turned Zimbabwe from a net exporter of food to a net importer of food. As the economy spiraled down, the country has increasingly relied on charity to feed itself.
Today, the country is in desperate need for people with farming knowledge to volunteer to help jump-start and reignite their farming industry. Endless acres of prime farmland have been left desolate. They need people who know who to till the land and remove the weeds that have sprung up over the last 39 years. The soil has been wrung dry of nutrients and needs the guiding hands of experienced farmers who can guide the people into restoring the ground so it can support annual crops. Zimbabwe once fed itself with ease; it needs volunteers to help it get back to that level.
