How to get the best car rental deal

  • July 22, 2011

Car rental prices have increased recently with many rental companies cutting their fleet numbers and thereby reducing supply. But if you’re taking a road trip at home or looking to hire a car on your travels, follow these tips to get the best from your budget.

1. Check and compare car rental prices on travel comparison websites but remember to check that the prices are like for like. Make sure the figures quoted include all fees and taxes.

2. Signup to receive alerts from all your national and local car hire firms so you find out first about any discounts on offer.

3. Join car rental membership schemes where your loyalty will be rewarded, much like a frequent flier programme.

4. Ask your employer if they are signed up to corporate plan which might allow you to use their discount rate to rent a vehicle for leisure purposes.

5. You should be able to secure a discount if you book a car as part of your holiday package, along with flights and hotels.

6. Try to avoid booking a rental car from an airport where costs are typically higher. Head into town to secure a cheaper deal.

7. Some rental companies offer a drop-off service which may save you a taxi fare or begging a ride to the rental office.

8. When you’re considering the insurance options, check that your current car insurance or indeed credit card dosen’t cover your rental car already. Read the fine print though!

9. More and more car rental firms are now offering hybrid rental cars which will save you money on fuel. But weigh up the increased rental cost versus the savings on fuel.

10. Make sure you have adequate car breakdown cover!
