The Vietnamese Prime Minister has just approved plans to construct a mega airport. This follows the recent news that Vietnam saw the biggest international tourist growth in 2010 in all of Southeast Asia!
The grand new airport will be built near Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon, Vietnam’s second city and business hub. Although Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has given the go ahead, the costs are as yet unconfirmed but estimated at 10 billion dollars.
The new airport will be located about 50km (30 miles) from downtown Ho Chi Minh City and could handle around 52 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo by the year 2035! The current Tan Son Nhat airport is currently Vietnam’s largest and most overcrowded airport and handles 12 million passengers and 278,000 tonnes of cargo each year.
We think it could be great timing and make Vietnam more accessible especially if ASEAN introduce a single visa for Southeast Asia as previously reported.
