What to consider when choosing food in a new country

  • March 22, 2017
  • admin

When it comes to holidaying, either overseas or right here in the United Kingdom, you need to think about food. Below, we’ve put together everything you need to consider when selecting food in a new country.

  1. Do you want to sample the local delicacies?

One of the most exciting parts of any holiday is sampling the local delicacies. You can learn a lot about a country and its culture through its food, so be brave and sample everything your destination has to offer. Although it’s easy to stick to your favourites, you should step out of your comfort zone and order something unique from the menu. It might be the only time you ever get to do so!

  1. What is your budget on food?

Food can be an expensive part of any holiday, so it’s important that you budget if you want to be able to enjoy yourself without worrying. To avoid splashing out in restaurants and cafes for every meal, consider a self-catering holiday in North Wales. Having your own kitchen and access to supermarkets and local markets is the best way to enjoy food on your holiday – and you’ll be able to sample local delicacies from bakeries to add to your meals.

  1. Will you like it?

There’s nothing worse than ordering a meal and not enjoying it, so consider asking for samples or requesting a range of starters and main courses to share between your party. That way, you won’t go hungry if something isn’t to your taste and still be able to get involved.

  1. Are you likely to be food poisoned?

When you’re away from home, you need to be extra vigilant against food poisoning. Be sure to use bottled or sterilised water if you’re not sure about local tap water, and avoid ice unless you’re sure it was made with chlorinated water. When it comes to food, make sure you eat fresh and thoroughly cooked food and avoid food that has sat for too long. When it comes to salads, make sure they have been washed in clean and treated water, and avoid ice cream from stall sellers that don’t look reputable. Finally, be cautious of fish and shellfish – uncooked fish can be hazardous and cause food poisoning, ruining your holiday.

  1. Will the restaurant cater to your allergies and dietary requirements?

If you have an allergy or specific dietary requirements, then you need to be careful when choosing food in a new country. WebMD has put together some tips for eating out when you’re trying to avoid peanuts or dairy products, which includes avoiding hidden sources of food and choosing the right restaurant. If you’re still concerned, print out an allergy card with information on your allergies in the local language – that way, you’ll always be sure that your waiter knows the situation and can adapt your meals accordingly.
