10 must-visit places in Coorg

  • March 13, 2015

Spending our lives in the concrete jungle, our eyes are accustomed to viewing only through the gaps between towering high rises. Conversely, a visit to Coorg will expand our horizons to include miles and miles of lush green expanse. The chilly weather, bounteous waterfalls and abundant flora and fauna of Coorg has earned it the nickname of Scotland of India.

The hill-station of Coorg offers many beautiful open areas in which to sit and relax and trails on which to trek. The fresh aroma of coffee plantations hits one’s nostrils, enlivening the senses in the crisp mornings. Animals are seen roaming in their natural habitat.

If you are considering taking a trip to this beautiful land, ensure that your Coorg holiday package includes these 10 places:

  1. Tadiandamol: The hills of Coorg are excellent for both short and long treks and the Tadiandamol peak is the most popular trekking destination there. Halfway up, you may set up camp at the Nalaknad Palace.
  2. Pushpagiri Hills: Dense jungles, breath-taking scenery and winding trails makes this range a favorite amongst forest trekkers.
  3. Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary: This sanctuary is the natural habitat for a number of elephants, tigers, leopard cats, lion-tailed macaques, sloth bear, spotted deer and slender lorises.
  4. Coffee Plantations: Coorg is famous for its bounteous and picturesque coffee plantations. Most resorts in Coorg can arrange a visit for you. Once there, learn from the experts about coffee picking and refinement and try the former yourself.
  5. Barapole River: Rafting at this river opens up a treasure trove of adventure and scenic delights for adrenaline junkies.
  6. Omkareshwara Temple: Religious or not, you are sure to enjoy a visit to this beautiful temple. Built in 1820 and devoted to Lord Shiva, it features a unique blend of Gothic and Islamic styles of architecture. The dome and four turrets make this temple truly unique.
  7. Raja’s Seat: There is no place better than this to take in the sunset in Karnataka. A verdant garden with flowers in full bloom and dancing fountains make this an unforgettable sight. Children might enjoy a ride on the toy train here.
  8. Cauvery Nisargadhama: An island shaped by the Cauvery River, this is a well-known picnic spot amidst locals and foreign tourists alike. Varied foliage, dense Bamboo groves and a number of teak and sandalwood trees may be found on this island. It is not uncommon to see deer and rabbits darting in your path. Overall, this island offers a scintillating experience.
  9. Madikeri Fort: This mud fort was built in the 17th Century atop a hill. Later, it was restructured using granite by Tipu Sultan. It also houses a palace, the architecture, design and cultural heritage of which will surely intrigue you.
  10. Nagarhole National Park: Officially known as the Rajiv Gandhi National Park, it is a tiger reserve and home to elephants, wild dogs, crocodiles and more. During the summer, you can see these animals in the open, basking in the sunlight.

Coorg offers many more delightful places to see. Opt for a holiday package that lets you cover the most destinations but in a relaxed, unhurried way. One of the luxury hotels in Coorg which offers exciting holiday packages is Vivanta by Taj – Madikeri.
