Hong Kong celebrates Chinese New Year in style

  • February 4, 2011

Happy Chinese New Year 2011! China is currently celebrating the Chinese New Year, which runs until Sunday 6 February, and Hong Kong in particular is set to receive a record breaking number of visitors.

This is the year of the rabbit and it’s estimated that Hong Kong will attract more than 650,000 visitors during the four day holiday. Travelers are flocking to Hong Kong to soak up the festival atmosphere, catch up with friends and family and shop-til-they-drop in the seasonal sales.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has estimated that visitors from China have risen by 15% lured by the vast shopping malls and festivities of recent Chinese New Year’s. And Hong Kong International Airport will receive a record breaking 986 inbound flights today (Friday 4 February), 13 more than last year. In fact, an astonishing 15,508 flights will arrive over the peak-travel 17 day Chinese New Year.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Hong for the 2011 Chinese New Year you’ll be treated to vibrant flower markets where you can buy Kumquat trees, narcissus and peonies to bring you future prosperity. Enjoy the fireworks display on Friday against the spectacular backdrop of city lights, harbour and mountains at Victoria Harbour. And immerse yourself in the local party theme ‘World City. World Party’ as you watch the parade of 13 magnificently decorated and brightly lit floats weave their way through Tsim Sha Tsui accompanied by local and international performers.
