  • March 17, 2014
  • Jules

This is your chance to be a part of the award winning, hit, TV period drama series, Downtown Abbey. Winner of the 2012 Golden Globes, the show is loved by many individuals all over the world and has an increasing fan base, including people of all ages, old and young, men and women. They are drawn to the elaborate costumes of centuries ago and the mysterious intrigue of a time gone by.

Some of the mystery and intrigue can now be removed as individuals are now able to pull back the curtains and peep not only backstage, but behind the scenes to catch a glimpse of what goes into the making of such an epic show. The towns and villages, the castle, and all the sites of interest featured in the show will be revealed as you enjoy the Downtown Abbey Tours.

For television, movie lovers, those interested in the art of filmmaking, and the history of films and their locations, the Downtown Abbey Tour of locations is not to be missed. It promises to be a treat this year. The tour features the well-known locations made popular by the TV series. Fans of the popular TV series will be excited to see in person the familiar sites of Downtown Abbey and the Village.

It starts in the quaint village of Oxfordshire, which is the location for the movie town Downtown Village. It also includes the church, pub, and hospital in the village and some famous homes of the characters, such as Matthew Crawley. During the tour you will be treated to fun facts and background information on the making of the show and behind the scenes information.

After a short rest stop it’s on to tour the site of the Downtown Abbey set at the 1000 year old Highclere Castle. There are no guided tours available. You are free to explore and wander the castle on your own. Read the facts and trivia available in handouts and learn about the fascinating details and history of the castle.

You will gain invaluable insight into the lives of the TV characters who lived there and the inhabitants who called the castle home. This is the home of the Crawley family and their servants as it existed more than a hundred years ago. All their lives severely impacted though each in a different way by World War I, yet indelibly intertwined, linked forever.

A major part of the excitement and drama of seeing and being a part of the Downtown Abbey tours, is meeting other fans of the shows and sharing opinions and hearing about their favourite episodes and characters. The camaraderie shared is part of the thrill. The shared oohs and aahs as you finally come face to face with the images you have watched on TV for so long.

To enjoy the day to the fullest you should make a day trip of it. Hire a coach from Hardings Tours to be a part of the Downtown Abbey tours experience.
