The undoubted winner of the biggest and boldest fireworks display of all time goes to Dubai who set off more than half a million fireworks in one display, setting a new world record!
Whilst London delighted crowds with fruit flavoured confetti as part of its New Year fireworks spectacle, Dubai welcomed 2014 in spectacular style. The event was confirmed by Guinness World Records as the largest ever display, with more than 500,000 fireworks set off. The elaborate display took ten months to plan and just six minutes to execute. Dubai’s pyrotechnics utilised 100 computers to synchronise the performance which was set to a carefully orchestrated soundtrack.
The Emirate of superlatives staged the display along the length of Dubai’s seafront, which runs for some 94km (61 miles), creating an impressive 4D spectacle. As you can see in the video above the display includes some of the top landmarks in Dubai, including the Palm Jumeirah, the Burj Al Arab and the mighty Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest structure in the world at 2,717 feet (828 meters) tall.
The first few bursts of the opening salvo trumped the previous holder of the record – Kuwait set off 77,282 in 2012.
