Paris is world renowned as a center of culture and art – this is evident in the fascinating art exhibitions in Paris throughout January 2014 and beyond.

Lost in Paris: until 11 January 2014

Design and tourism unite in this innovative exhibition. Held at Paris’ Le Lieu du Design in the city’s’ 12th arrondissement, this is both an original and offbeat concept, designed by Tal Lancman and Maurizio Galante. Together a personal vision of Paris is presented to visitors. Entrance is free.

Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera – Art in fusion: until 13 January 2014

The Mexican surrealist artist Frida Kahlo and her modern artist husband, Diego Rivera are celebrated at the ‘Art in Fusion’ exhibition at Paris’ Musée de l’Orangerie. The couple are legendary figures within the 20th century art realm. Frida Kahlo’s pieces depict life in all its brutal honesty, with her best known work being the self-portrait with the Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird. In fact this exhibition is a real must-see as the first French-held Kahlo presentation in 15 years and includes the painting ‘Columna Rota’. Diego Rivera was better known for his murals, easel paintings and prints and was inspired by key Parisian artists of the period. Entrance is 10€ at the Musée de l’Orangerie, with free entry on Sunday 5 January 2014.

Exhibition “Astérix à la BnF !”: until 19 January 2014

The series of French comics, first published in 1959, is presented in its own special exhibition at Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. The BnF contains one of the largest media collections in the world, with over 14 million nooks and documents within its collection. Asterix comics are known the world over – with the engaging tales translated in 111 different languages. In all, more than 350 million copies have snapped up. The original plates, typed storylines and handwritten notes are all on display this exhibition. Entrance is 7€.

Europunk: until 19 January 2014

Paris’s La Villette quarter in the 19th arrondissement is home to the Cité de la Musique Museum which hosts the fascinating Europunk exhibition in January 2014. The heady creations of the punk era are brought to life in all their late 1970’s glory. The punk movement took France, as well as the UK, Germany and Italy by storm and spanned music, fashion and even art to a certain degree. And it’s these anonymous works that the exhibition presents across posters, disc sleeves and fanzines. Admission is 9€ and includes entrance to the entire museum.

Victorian Masterpieces: until 20 January 2014

The “Désirs & Volupté” of the Victorian era are amply represented in this engaging exhibition. Held in Paris at the Musée Jacquemart-André Museum in the city’s 8th arrondissement. Visitors are invited to discover for themselves the famous British artists that honed their craft during the rule of Queen Victoria (1837 – 1901). Discover works from greats such as Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema who based his works on the opulence of the Roman Empire; Sir Frederic Leighton whose paintings and sculptures covering biblical subjects became legendary; Edward Burne-Jones who was a well-known figure in the Pre-Raphaelite movement and Albert Moore who captured classical female figures. Entrance is 11€.
