Top 5 Exciting Things to do in Fethiye, Turkey

  • December 7, 2013
  • Jules

The western Mediterranean, and in particular the pretty city of Fethiye, has been welcoming curious travellers for years, drawn to the ancient cultural sights, luscious beaches and laidback atmosphere. There’s plenty to see and do all year round, these are just five suggested sights and activities.

Visit the ruins of Telmessos

Thanks to its ancient locale, Fethiye is buried in history. Quite literally, as the town was founded on top on the Hellenistic era city of Telmessos, which at the time was under the rule of the Greek Empire. A visitor to Fethiye need not go far to run into one of the many ruins that still exist today as the structures peek out amongst the modern day cityscape. A sight of particular interest includes the Tomb of Telmessos, one of several majestic pieces of Greek-style architecture carved out of the stone hillside. Losing oneself in the lost city of civilizations passed is easily an all-day activity.

Hike the Lycian Way

Outdoor lovers will have no problem finding ways to enjoy themselves in Fethiye. Particularly since the town is located at the western tip of the spectacular Lycian trail, which, nearly 600 km long, wraps around the southern coast of Turkey. This ancient pathway is festooned with exotic plant life and shrubbery, shaped by dynamic terrain, and of course, surrounded by stunning views of the Mediterranean shore and outlying islands. This region is where many ex pats have chosen to relocate to and the area offers some of the best property in Fethiye overlooking the crystalline sea. Depending on how adventurous one is feeling, the Lycian way hike could be a simple afternoon activity or a several day affair, with dozens of camping spots to give trekkers a chance to spend a night outdoors, beneath stars.

Relax at Ölüdeniz Beach

The pièce de résistance of the many local beaches in the Fethiye area would have to be Ölüdeniz. The pristine sandy shores, along with the shrub-covered mountain backdrop, allow visitors a world class beach going experience, whether it be relaxing in the sun or taking part in a popular paragliding adventure. The real hidden treasure of Ölüdeniz, however, is its “Blue Lagoon.” This tucked away lake, with watery hues that fade from cobalt to seafoam, really does seem straight out of a fairy tale.

Indulge at Fethiye market

A day of hiking, swimming, or sight-seeing in Fethiye is enough to give anyone a healthy appetite. There’s no better way to get a real taste of Fethiye than to visit the local farmer’s market, which takes place every Tuesday in the town center. The selection of locally grown fruits and vegetables is endless. It’s not hard to imagine why locals, thousands of years ago, may have imagined the Gods and Goddesses of the time gorging themselves on similarly tantalizing fare.

Watch the Fethiye Fountains

After a day of excitement from any of Fethiye daytime adventures, a little “light” evening entertainment can be the ideal night cap. In this case, the Fethiye Fountains in Uğur Mumcu Park are just the right choice. This artistic array of town square geysers are complimented by sprays of pastel lights, creating a dazzling display of shimmering liquid. In fact, one could say it’s a perfect representation of the eternal youthfulness of this ancient, yet colorful nook of the Mediterranean.
