There’s no doubt that cities like New York and Los Angeles hold something extra special for tourists and those who have made the big decision to travel across one of the most exciting countries in the world.
With that in mind, there are also one or two magical locations that are often looked over during the planning stages of a roadtrip. So, here are four alternative cities worth a gander during any roadtrip.
Seattle, Washington
Once the musical centre of the universe, Seattle, despite being one of the rainiest cities in the country, is one of the most vibrant, cultural and creative hotspots on the West Coast (it also has more bookstores per capita than any other city).
Also home to Starbucks, Boeing and Microsoft, the city offers a metropolis of activities on the edge of one of the largest state parks in the US. For those who certainly feel up to the job, the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition is one of the leading attractions in the city and can be found at the foot of the famous Space Needle.
Portland, Oregon
Recently awarded the “Greenest City in America”, Portland is a mecca for hipsters and hippies alike. Aside from being a major draw for nature lovers, Portland is also home to a large number of creatives including the likes of Gus Van Sant, Matt Groening, Chuck Palahnuik, The Shins and The Dandy Warhols.
Aside from the six major theatres that reside within the city centre, for those who wish to get a little closer to nature, the World Forestry Centre offers a great day out for those wishing to learn about forestry and sustainability.
New Orleans, Louisiana
Possibly the loudest city in the US, there’s no quelling the vibrancy that springs out of New Orleans each and every day.
If you live and breathe music, then you’ll be interested to know that New Orleans is one of the musical cities in the world and plays host to some of the most colourful and authentic jazz, blues and funk clubs in existence.
For those searching for something a little quieter, the French Quarter offers a plethora of wonder, history and shopping.
Eureka, California
The largest city between Portland and San Francisco, Eureka has been named as one of the best small arts towns in the states.
If you fancy testing out your sea legs, one of the biggest attractions in the city is the Humboldt Bay Harbour Cruises that offers you the chance to experience some of wonders of the Californian Coast – while sampling some of the finest cocktails in about a hundred miles.
When it comes to history, Eureka is also a hive of wonder, with the town having been a key part in the 19th century gold rush, and with that in mind, Old Town Eureka provides a great snapshot of a time long past.
